History:
The charming apartment just renovated by Isabella Antinori and her team is a delight for the eyes and the body. Set in the apse of the Church of San Carlo dei Lombardi in via Calzaiuoli – the main route of the heart of Florence, which connects Piazza Duomo with Piazza della Signoria – we find the “priest’s house”, the old home of many parish priests who passed through church in question. The Church, built by Simone Talenti, Neri di Fioravanti and Benci di Cione Dami in 1349 was first dedicated to Sant’Anna, after construction it was dedicated to San Michele and from the 1600s to Carlo Borromeo.
From the entrance we enter an elevated living room decorated with friezes, 19th century paintings and historical furnishings such as the bases of a seventeenth-century console that support the table top. The lowered rooms, with fourteenth and seventeenth-century frescoes, at the ends of the house represent the old chapels of the “priest’s house” and the light points of the master bedroom are obtained from sectioned and reworked church candelabra with a bas-relief effect.
In one of these rooms there is a secret passage that the priest who lived in the house used to go through to go to church. We also find a halved window created in the 19th century – which testifies to the reconstruction of the facade – between the bedroom and a seventeenth-century bathroom with only sink and shower, but which expresses all that was and still is this historic corner in the center of Florence.
Everything in this house reflects the origin; after having always been the property of the church until 1930, it in fact passed into the hands of the family of a Florentine engineer and was later taken over by Isabella Antinori, a passionate interior designer, proponent of the works and current owner.
Isabella attributes the energy and positive strength that are found staying in this house to a load of wishes and prayers of the faithful who have lived here, those desires that have settled and transformed into energy. In fact, a “silence” of remembrance is requested through a painting representing The Alchemist, which affects the two side doors to a wall from 1100, the wall of the tower that stood in via dei Cimatori even before the church.
During the recovery, splendid frescoes of 300 (right side), 600 (cimatori side) and 800 in the central hall emerged and the restorer has intervened with some additions in the empty spaces or erased by time and from here comes a new energy , derived from this co-presence that creates a game of superimpositions between past and present in a fascinating way.
In short, staying in this splendid deluxe apartment is like taking a dip in history, it is like staying in a museum that contains the links between what it was, what it is and what it will be.
